How Classroom Environment and General Grit Predict Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety of Chinese EFL Students

Interest in the role of learners’ personality, emotions and learning environment foreign language (FL) has grown exponentially past decade. The introduction personality psychology field applied linguistics led to inclusion a set dimensions research designs like resilience grit, which have been shown be significant predictors FL achievement. abrupt emergence COVID-19 2020 forced universities around world move their courses online, named Emergency Remote Teaching. sudden change offers unique opportunity researchers investigate whether relationships between classroom traditional ‘in-person’ classes, those emotions, also exist new online environments. present study examined anxiety (FLCA) Chinese secondary students at different instruction levels its links with learner-internal external factors, namely general grit (CE) English classes. A total 1,526 completed an questionnaire. Pearson correlation analyses regression revealed that CE predicted FLCA either independently or jointly. findings are discussed interpreted light existing on person-environment interaction. We identify avenues for further propose number pedagogical implications optimizing teaching.
